What Exactly is Organic Food anyway?

From the pages of The Wellness Wire, the monthly online publication from Nutrilite! Here is a question I have been asked a lot, and here is a great response to the question.
I highly recommend the book suggested below, The Optimal Health Revolution. Fantastic book and excellent source of knowledge for a healthy lifestyle!
What does organic really mean?
Choose organic products when they are available.

If you’ve been to a grocery store lately, you’ve probably seen a huge growth in the number of products that claim to be some form of organic. When you’re considering purchasing an organic product, you might wonder, “What does it take to be considered a true organic product?”

To be certified as organic, food products need to come from farms and processing plants that are certified as organic. This means that they are inspected to ensure that the organic farms are up to standards. The inspectors make sure that only organic methods are used and that the environment is not contaminated with pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or other non-organic compounds. Go to www.nutrilitehealth.ca and click on Why Nutrilite?

What do the labels mean?
Foods that are organically grown can state that fact on the label. It is important to understand exactly what organic labels mean, to know what you’re paying for.

100% Organic label
Foods that are labeled as 100% Organic must contain all organically grown ingredients except for added water and salt.

Organic label
Foods that are labeled as Organic need to contain at least 95% organic ingredients, except for added water and salt, plus they must not contain sulfites added as a preservative. Up to 5% of the ingredients may be non-organically produced.

Made with Organic Ingredients label
Product labels that claim Made with Organic Ingredients need to contain at least 70% organic ingredients, except for added water and salt. They must not contain added sulfites, and up to 30% of the ingredients may be non-organically produced. Food products made with less than 70% organic ingredients may state which ingredients are organic, but they cannot claim to be organic food products.

Dr. Duke Johnson, M.D., Medical Director, Nutrilite Health Institute, shares in his book Optimal Health Revolution, “Eat organically grown and raised fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products. If you don’t have an organic choice, keep eating your 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily because their massive phytonutrient load seems to be of greater benefit than the risk of chemicals they could contain.”

You Never Can Tell

Hey Everyone!

I came across this poem while reading a great book, Fifty-Two Lessons for Life, by Napoleon Hill and Judith Williamson. It is talking about having a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) and how important it is for everything we do in life, because what your attitude is will also be the attitudes of those coming back to you.

I'll sum up my viewpoint on attitude this way: bad things and good things happen to us, and in either case our reaction to them is our decision. Our attitude is a choice, and reflects directly on our beliefs, will power, thoughts, strengths and weaknesses. You are only as big or small as the challenges that you let get you down.

As an example, your car might break down. You can choose to be angry and frustrated by it, or you can choose to keep a smile on your face knowing that somehow you will get through this challenge. Either way, the car is still broken down and needs fixing! Choosing anger will probably just make matters worse. Choosing happiness might not make the car get fixed, but it will allow the stress of the situation to wash away more easily, leaving you with better peace of mind.

I am writing the poem here, and I highly recommend the book as well! The poem was written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (died in 1919, you can read about her life and writings here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ella_Wheeler_Wilcox).

I hope this can help you somehow. Enjoy!

You Never Can Tell

by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

You never can tell when you send a word,
Like an arrow shot from a bow,
By an archer blind, be it cruel or kind,
Just where it may chance to go,

It may pierce the breast of your dearest friend,
Tipped with its poison or balm,
To a stranger's heart in life's great mart,
It may carry its pain or its calm.

You never can tell when you do an act,
Just what the result will be,
But with every deed you are sowing a seed,
Though the harvest you may not see.

Each kindly act is an acorn dropped,
In God's productive soil.
You may not know, but the tree shall grow,
With shelter for those who toil.

You never can tell what your thoughts will do,
In bringing you hate or love,
For thoughts are things, and their airy wings,
Are swifter than carrier doves.

They follow the law of the universe,
Each thing must create its kind,
And they speed o'er the track to bring you back,
Whatever went out from your mind.

2010 New Year Wish For You

I wanted to send something to you all on New Year's Eve, or shortly thereafter, but the words just didn't seem to be coming to me. So I kept on my daily routine of reading something positive, listening to positive speeches on CD, and finally I got some of the right words to share!

It really came down to what do I wish for everyone I know in my life for this new year, 2010. I wish the best for you all, I really do! In whatever endeavors you are currently involved in, I really hope that you have great success in it for yourself, your family and loved ones, and for the community around you. But saying "good luck" didn't really seem adequate for giving you some inspiration for this upcoming year. I needed more.

And then I found this wonderful little tidbit while listening to one of my favorite speakers on Saturday. The CD was on in the van, and I think I have heard this particular talk about a dozen times, but I put it in again anyway. One small part here that he talks about, that seemed to jump out at me for the first time, I want to share with you:

(paraphrased from speech)

"...be good at Plan A, but learn to be really great at Plan B. We've had many times where we have prepared ourselves for what we thought might happen, and then something happens - some circumstance or situation out of our control - and we have to switch to Plan B. Or Plan C, Plan D, Plan E....or whatever it takes to make it happen. It was hard at first, because when things don't go your way it is easier to quit. But those people who are truly successful find a way to move beyond the challenges and keep trying until they make it through to success...."

I couldn't agree more! And that is my wish for all of you reading this for your New Year: set your goals, but be prepared to have a Plan B, or C, or D, or E....or as many Plan ___ as it takes to accomplish your goal! You know you can do it - somewhere, deep down inside, you know you can accomplish whatever dream it is you have in your heart, otherwise you never would have been able to dream it in the first place.

The opposite of success is not failure. The opposite of success is quitting. And that's why "Plan B" works every time, because as long as you refuse to quit, as long as you insist on pushing forward towards your goal, you will achieve it! Set your goals, put the action in, back it up with belief and faith, and it will be yours.

I wish you all the most fantastic 2010! God bless!

Sincerely,

Andreas (& Tracy) Z.
